Caltrans begins a long-range project on Sept. 8 to replace the concrete median barrier on US 101 (Hollywood Freeway/Ventura Freeway) between Hollywood and Woodland Hills. The entire median replacement is expected to be completed in early 2023.
The first section of the 19.3 mile project is from the Pilgrimage Bridge in Hollywood to the State Route 170/US 101 (Hollywood Freeway) connector.
Lane closures are set to begin at 9 p.m. Sept. 8 and run through 5 a.m. Sept. 9. The estimated lane closures for this section of the project are from 9 p.m.-5 a.m. Sept. 9-10. The schedule is weather-permitting and dates and times are subject to change.
Caltrans estimates that some lanes may be closed in either direction or in both directions simultaneously. One or two lanes in each direction will remain open for traffic during the construction work.
Also, the northbound on-ramp at Highland Avenue will be closed.
Drivers should expect delays and are encouraged to avoid the area by using alternate routes. Traffic conditions may be checked on the Caltrans Quickmap: quickmap.dot.ca.gov
Caltrans, according to a press release, is replacing the median barrier as part of their district-wide safety measure to improve the effectiveness of the barrier and also to reduce median collision severity for motorists. The other benefit of the project is better glare protection from opposite traffic due to the increased height of the median.
Residents and businesses in the area should be aware that dust, noise and vibrations will be in play during the project.
The contractor for the $49.7 million project is OHL USA, Inc. of Irvine.
