The City of West Hollywood's General Municipal Election was held on Tuesday, November 3, 2020. Operations for Vote Centers, voting, and counting are being conducted by the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk.
Unofficial election results indicate that candidates Sepi Shyne and John Erickson have secured the top number of votes by West Hollywood voters for two seats on the City Council of the City of West Hollywood. Unofficial election results, updated on Wednesday, November 4, 2020 at approximately 2 a.m. indicate that Sepi Shyne has secured 6,739 votes and John Erickson has secured 6,228 votes. The candidate with the next highest number of votes is incumbent John Heilman with 5,333 votes.
Unofficial election results also indicate that Measure E, a measure establishing a 3/4¢ sales tax, has been approved by West Hollywood voters with votes currently tallied at 12,351 "yes" (73.1%) and 4,546 "no" (26.9%). Measure E will provide approximately $11,000,000 annually to maintain City of West Hollywood services and recover from public health emergencies; support senior services and health-related services; keep public areas clean and safe; address homelessness; help retain local businesses and jobs; repair potholes and streets; maintain public safety and 911 response; and provide other City services. It will exist until ended by voters, and requires public disclosure of spending, independent financial audits, and all funds to be used locally.
There are 29,523 registered voters in the City of West Hollywood. The Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk's office must still count same-day registration ballots, provisional ballots, and Vote-by-Mail ballots received on Election Day. Final election results are scheduled to be certified by the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk on Monday, November 30, 2020 and it is anticipated that the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors will declare the Election concluded on Tuesday, December 8, 2020.
The two newly elected Councilmembers are anticipated to be sworn-in at the regular meeting of the City Council of the City of West Hollywood on Monday, December 7, 2020 at 6 p.m. The City Council annually elects the City's Mayor and Mayor Pro Tempore in a rotation of Councilmembers. The current Mayor, Lindsey P. Horvath, will continue her Mayoral position through Monday, May 17, 2021. As current Mayor Pro Tempore John Heilman is not anticipated to win re-election, the West Hollywood City Council is anticipated to elect a new Councilmember to serve as Mayor Pro Tempore at its Monday, December 21, 2020, 6 p.m., regular meeting.
