Matthew McConaughey brutally shuts down Carrie Bickmore’s line of questioning on The Project as she asks 'how he feels' about Donald Trump

Matthew McConaughey savagely shut down a question on how he 'feels about' president Donald Trump during an interview on Wednesday night's The Project.

The 50-year-old Hollywood actor had appeared on the Channel 10 panel show to discuss his new memoir, Greenlights - but awkwardly refused to answer a question on politics when queried by host Carrie Bickmore.

'How do I feel about him?' he said. 'I want a fuller context and a longer form to talk about that.

'If I said something to you now, one line could be taken out of context and could be put into a headline, so I don't want to take the chance for that.

'I need a longer form, where I know it's word for word - everything I'm saying is being broadcast.'

Taken aback by his response, Carrie, 39, responded: 'Well let's lock in that chat for another day!'

She quickly wrapped up the interview, saying 'Great to chat! It's been fabulous. Thank you very much for your time.'

Matthew has rarely spoken out about his political views in the past.

But in an interview with BBC's Andrew Marr in 2017, he was asked if 'the cultural elite of America should give [Trump] a break.'

In response, Matthew said: 'Well, they don’t have a choice now. He’s our president. And it’s very dynamic and as divisive of an inauguration and time we’ve ever had.

'At the same time, it’s time for us to embrace and shake hands with this fact and be constructive with him over the next four years.'

His comments were in the aftermath of Trump's election - and a year later, when he was asked to clarify his words, he gave a similar statement to The Daily Beast.

'What I said, or thought I said, is that people were in denial and we have to accept the fact that he’s president,' he said.

He said he would only express his views on camera in an unedited form, adding: 'It’s just that I don’t want to become clickbait.'

Staying quiet: Matthew has rarely spoken out about his political views in past interviews - but in the aftermath following his election, he said: 'it’s time for us to embrace and shake hands with this fact and be constructive with him over the next four years'
