The Liev Schreiber-led drama was abruptly canceled a year ago after seven seasons.

Ray Donovan fans, rejoice.

Showtime is officially bringing back the canceled drama for a one-off movie that will bring a proper — and planned — closure to the drama starring Liev Schreiber that was abruptly canceled last year after seven seasons.

Schreiber will return to star alongside Jon Voight and Kerris Dorsey as Ray's father and daughter, respectively. Filming will begin later this year in New York. The feature-length film will be be written by Schreiber and showrunner David Hollander, with the latter set to direct. The film will pick up where season seven left off. Here's how Showtime describes it: Mickey is in the wind and Ray is determined to find and stop him before he can cause any more carnage. It will also weave together the present-day fallout from the Donovan/Sullivan feud with Ray and Mickey's origin story from 30 years ago.

Ahead of the February 2020 cancellation, Schreiber had been vocal about wanting an eighth season of his fixer drama from Hollander. Season seven ended with a cliffhanger in an installment that was co-written by Hollander and Schreiber. Showtime's co-head of entertainment Gary Levine had said the show was nearing its end and was always intended to run "about seven or eight seasons."

The movie farewell brings to an end the fan backlash that ensued following Ray Donovan's cancellation last year. Hollander also was open about the cancellation and noted that he was blindsided by the ViacomCBS-owned cabler's decision to end the series. Schreiber told fans on social media a week after the cancellation that their "voices have been heard," noting that it was "too soon to say how or when, but with a little luck and your ongoing support, there will be more Ray Donovan."

"When Ray Donovan went off our air after seven great seasons, we heard from so many of its loyal fans that they were not ready to say goodbye to Ray and the wonderfully dysfunctional Donovan clan,” Levine said in a statement Wednesday. "And so, for them, we are delighted that Liev and David are creating a thrilling new chapter of this iconic series."

A wrap-up movie is not unheard of. HBO revived Deadwood to bring the David Milch series to a proper end in 2019. Other series that came back with a one-off movie to wrap their runs include Firefly (Serenity), Breaking Bad (El Camino), Veronica Mars (which was later revived as a limited series), Sense8 and Transparent.

The Ray Donovan film is exec produced by Hollander, Schreiber, Mark Gordon, Bryan Zuriff and Lou Fusaro.

The news was announced Wednesday as part of ViacomCBS' investor day that was largely focused on the rebranding of streamer CBS All Access to Paramount+.
