Hollywood's Thompson Hotel Opening Hits Snag Amid Unpaid Contractor Fees - Hollywood Reporter

"In 38 years in the business, this is the first time I've had to enforce a lien on a project," says David Paternostro of Top End Terrazzo — known for their work on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Hollywood was due to have the area's first Thompson Hotels location in 2021 with an opening eyed for some time this spring on Wilcox Avenue. Those plans seem to have hit a snag with one of the high-profile contractors hired to work on the boutique hotel saying that his team got stiffed.

David Paternostro, president of Top End Terrazzo — a firm known for its work on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and casino projects like San Manuel and Morongo — tells The Hollywood Reporter that he has enforced a lien on the project over an unpaid balance of $313,418 for work his firm did in the hotel's lobby. “In 38 years in the business, this is the first time I’ve had to enforce a lien on a project," he explains. “I haven’t gotten paid a penny, and I was almost done with it. Terrazzo is not cheap, nor is labor. I had to pay for it just to have my guys continue.

Adds Paternostro: "You can’t treat your contractors like that. I would understand if our work was not good or unacceptable, but they told me that they loved it. I would not be squawking if we did a bad job.”

Paternostro said he was hired by a contractor from Suffolk Construction that was working for hotel developer the Relevant Group. The work included flooring and terrazzo tile against the wall along with some countertops.

The Hollywood Reporter reached out to Suffolk Construction, Relevant and a rep for Hyatt (owner of Thompson) for comment. A Thompson Hollywood rep responded, blaming the pandemic for its delays. "While COVID-19 has led to minor construction delays, we expect to receive our Temporary Certificate of Occupancy in less than 8 weeks and look forward to opening Thompson Hollywood this spring."

Per the hotel's website, Thompson is now accepting reservations starting Oct. 1.
