The Lyric Opera of Kansas City released the schedule for its upcoming season, and the lineup ranges from timeless stories to modern icons.
Even if opera isn’t your forte, the Lyric Opera hopes to welcome all audiences after a canceled season according to a news release.
“While some things may be different, we remain committed to exciting your senses and opening your world,” general director Deborah Sandler says in the release.
The season kicks off November 13 with Lyric Opera Goes to Hollywood, which spotlights the famous arias and music of film. The show will emphasize the drama and emotion that is crucial to both movies and operas.
The holiday classic Amahl and the Night Visitors returns December 2-12 with puppets designed by local puppet master Paul Mesner. This is the first live production of the show after its 2020 debut was performed virtually. Based in biblical Bethlehem, a young boy hosts the three kings in his home in this retelling of the Nativity.
Operas often pay tribute to larger-than-life figures, and the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs fits the bill. The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs explores his journey to becoming the face of Silicon Valley while demystifying his character as he struggles with personal relationships. The show runs March 11-13 and stars John Moore as the tech icon.
The season will close with Tosca by legendary Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini. A celebrated singer’s lover is pursued by the police, and what follows is a real-time spiral of violence, love and melodrama. The favorite opera runs April 30, May 6 and 8.
All shows will take place at Kauffman Center, except Amahl and the Night Visitors at the Michael and Ginger Frost Production Arts Building.
