Hollywood Walk of Fame's iconic star-shaped plaques honor talent and contributions to the entertainment industry.

The world's most famous sidewalk has over the years grown from a 1953 advertising gimmick into one of Hollywood's top tourist attractions, drawing approximately 10 million visitors annually.

But eagle-eyed visitors may spot some seemingly odd inclusions among the roughly 2,600 celebrity stars embedded along Hollywood Boulevard.

From cartoons to cars and diners to dogs, Newsweek presents some of the strangest stars to be found along the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

1. Apollo 11 Mission

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in the early 1970s honored the Apollo 11 mission and the U.S. astronauts who landed on the moon on July 20, 1969, with a uniquely designed special award in the category of Television as a tribute to the first televised walk on the moon.

The most famous live TV broadcast of all time was also the longest continuous live television coverage in history, lasting for 31 hours straight.

2. Big Bird

Big Bird is the lead Muppet character in the long-running children's television show Sesame Street.

As well as being honored with a Hollywood Walk of Fame star, Bird has appeared on the cover of Time magazine, on a U.S. postage stamp and has even visited the White House.

3. Bugs Bunny

Bugs Bunny is the fictional Looney Tunes character that first appeared in the short animation Porky's Hare Hunt, in April, 1938

The Warner Brothers mascot received his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1985, located at 7007 Hollywood Boulevard.

Chevrolet's largest Sports Utility Vehicle is the first car to be recognized with a starring spot on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The American car manufacturer claims the Suburban has appeared in more than 1750 films in 67 years, including appearances in more than 30 award-nominated movies.

5. Disneyland

On its 50th anniversary in 2005, Disneyland received a star near the iconic animation studio's Soda Fountain on Hollywood Boulevard.

Stars for commercial organizations are only considered for those with a Hollywood show business connection of at least 50 years' duration.

However, because city ordinance prohibits placing corporate names on sidewalks, the Disneyland star is technically installed adjacent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

6. Kermit the Frog

Kermit the Frog, puppeteer Jim Henson's most famous Muppet creation, was first introduced in 1955.

American actor and Muppet fan David Arquette was among the celebrities supporting Kermit the Frog when the popular puppet received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2002.

7. Godzilla

Godzilla first appeared in the seminal 1954 Japanese kaiju film of the same name and was praised as a powerful metaphor for the nuclear holocaust.

The lizard-like monster, which has spawned a succession of popular Hollywood movies, was in 2004 awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, to coincide with the premiere of the character's 50th-anniversary movie Godzilla: Final Wars.

8. The Harlem Globetrotters

The Harlem Globetrotters are an exhibition basketball team created in 1926 that has to date played more than 20,000 exhibition games in 118 countries.

After appearing in movies and two different animated series, the Globetrotters received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1982, in recognition of their role as entertainers.

9. Hugh Hefner

Hugh Hefner is best known as the founder of the long-running adult magazine Playboy, which debuted in 1953 with a nude photoshoot of screen siren Marilyn Monroe.

The controversial character has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his numerous television and movie appearances as himself, including The Simpsons and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

10. Lassie

Lassie, the stage name for numerous canine actors, was first featured in the 1943 film Lassie Come Home and has periodically appeared in movies and TV ever since.

The fictional female collie is not the only dog to be honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, with Rin Tin Tin and Strongheart also recognized on the Boulevard.

11. Earvin "Magic" Johnson

American former professional basketball player Magic Johnson is recognized as one of the all-time NBA greats and attracted praise for returning to the game after being diagnosed with HIV in 1991.

The sports star was added to the Motion Picture category of the Hollywood Walk of Fame because of his ownership of the Magic Johnson Theatre chain.

12. Mickey Mouse

Mickey Mouse became perhaps the world's most iconic cartoon character after it was created in 1928 by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks.

Mickey Mouse became in November 1978 the 1,700th star—and first animated personality—to receive a plaque presence on Hollywood Boulevard's Walk of Fame.

13. Muhammad Ali

American professional boxer and political activist Muhammad Ali is widely regarded as one of the most significant and celebrated figures of the 20th century

In 2002, Ali was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contributions to the entertainment industry.

Ali's star is unique, being the only one to be mounted on a vertical surface, out of deference to the legend's request the name Muhammad—a name he shares with the Islamic prophet—not be walked upon.

14. Munchkin

The largest number of people represented by a single star is the estimated 122 adults and 12 children collectively known as the Munchkins, from the legendary 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz.

The Munchkins were awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in November 2007, in a ceremony attended by seven of the surviving actors from the award-winning movie.

15. Musso & Frank

In 2019, Musso & Frank became the first restaurant to be awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The iconic Los Angeles restaurant has featured on the silver screen in several movies and TV series, including Ocean's Eleven, Mad Men and Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

16. Pee-wee Herman

Pee-wee Herman is one of the strangest characters to possess a Hollywood Walk of Fame star, as his background has remained relatively ambiguous.

During interviews, he has been portrayed as though he is a real-life stand-up comedian playing himself in movie and TV shows, resulting in the recognition awarded to Pee-wee Herman instead of actor Paul Reubens.

17. Winnie The Pooh

Pooh debuted as a cartoon character in the 1966 Disney featurette Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree and the affable animated bear has since starred in dozens of movies and cartoon series.

The children's character, created in the 1920s by British author A.A. Milne, was joined at his 2006 Hollywood Walk of Fame star unveiling by his Hundred Acre Wood friends Tigger, Eeyore and Rabbit.

18. Snoopy

The world's favorite beagle Snoopy joined the ranks of Hollywood's elite when the pooch was awarded plaque number 2,563 on the Walk of Fame.

Snoopy debuted in Charles M. Schulz's Peanuts comic strip in 1950 and his career has involved starred in scores of TV specials, and appearances in five movies.

19. The Simpsons

The Simpsons is the American animated satirical TV series centered around the titular family, consisting of patriarch Homer, his wife Marge and children Bart, Lisa and Maggie.

Time magazine's December 31, 1999 issue named it the 20th century's best television series, and the Simpson family was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in January 2000.

20. Donald Trump

The 45th U.S. President, business magnate and reality TV personality Donald Trump received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his work as producer of Miss Universe.

However, the continued controversy surrounding Mr Trump has resulted in his Hollywood Walk of Fame star being defaced several times since it was awarded in 2007.
