In a splashy Vogue interview, Hollywood star Jennifer Lawrence inadvertently revealed why many Hollywood icons are hypocritical jokes, not solid role models.
Of all the big-name Hollywood actors and actresses, Lawrence actually often comes across as the most likable. Lawrence garnered a huge following among younger generations for her portrayal of Katniss Everdeen in the Hunger Games movie series. Lawrence grew up in a Republican family but later adopted more left-wing politics. Her liberal views were sealed this last year when the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and sent abortion laws back to the states. Admitting that she discusses recurring nightmares about Fox News host Tucker Carlson with her therapist, Lawrence referenced Roe, saying, "I don’t want to disparage my family, but I know that a lot of people are in a similar position with their families. How could you raise a daughter from birth and believe that she doesn’t deserve equality? How?"
Bear in mind Lawrence made these comments after recently giving birth to a son and admitting she loved motherhood. Only a die-hard liberal could think that Lawrence's newborn baby lacks equal rights because abortion laws are now up to each state. Still, politics have become so important to Lawrence that she’s struggling to "forgive" her family for — wait for it — being Republicans.
Politics are important. That said, this lament over her family's normal conservative views, including having nightmares about a Fox News host, isn't healthy. Nor, for example, is the moral supremacy that Hollywood celebrities like Lawrence tend to adopt. Consider Hollywood icons Kim Kardashian, Sylvester Stallone, and Kevin Hart recently exceeded their allotted water limits by a massive margin compared to other residents of California. They care little that their state is facing its third consecutive drought, only that they retain special treatment. Again, the moral hypocrisy is clear: We’ve heard hardly a peep from Hollywood’s climate change activists.
True, Hollywood stars sometimes use their fame for good. Sometimes the stuff they say in interviews is interesting, even compelling. But most of the people thriving in Hollywood are living in a bubble with wealth beyond anyone’s wildest dreams. At a time when inflation is sky high and many middle-class families are struggling to make ends meet, their extravagant vacations, security entourages, and moral lecturing are tough to swallow.
And when stars like Lawrence who have so many younger fans share that they’re struggling to make amends with their families for holding traditional conservative views?
Well, it sends a very negative message.
