A man found dead next to his running vehicle in Hollywood early Friday morning has been identified as a 40-year-old Southern California native who had been working in the San Fernando Valley and living in Encino with family.

Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call in the area of Yucca Street and La Baig Avenue just off the 101 Freeway and outside the First Presbyterian Church just after 1 a.m.

At the scene, police found the victim, identified by his family as Carlos Beltran, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

“They discovered the victim deceased in the road next to his running vehicle,” LAPD Det. Samuel Murillo said.

Authorities also said that the victim was found with all his belongings on him and that it didn’t appear as if anything had been stolen.

According to Beltran’s family, he had been working as a security guard in the Studio City and Burbank areas. He was supposed to work that night, but when his shift got cancelled, they said the 40-year-old, who was passionate about music and had recorded some songs in a downtown Los Angeles studio, instead went to meet a friend about some of his latest music.

“I just have no words for what happened to my brother,” the victim’s sister, Nataly Beltran, told KTLA’s Mary Beth McDade.

She said that he often visited Yucca Street and enjoyed kicking a soccer ball against the wall. The 40-year-old had grown up in the Hollywood area, attending Hollywood High School.

“This street just means so much, so much, and now it’s like a nightmare to walk through here, just imaging that my brother was left in the street,” she added.

Family and friends gathered at the scene of their loved one’s death Monday night to remember him and his passion for hip-hop and rap music, which he performed under the name Carlitos Aka Chunk, according to his YouTube page

“Ever since I can remember, I can always remember him with a notebook and a pen on him just writing away, freestyling,” Nataly said.

Even though Beltran and his family moved to Encino, he never stopped writing songs about Hollywood, where he grew up.

“I want his music to be heard,” Nataly said. “That’s all he ever wanted.”

Loved ones remembered the 40-year-old as a kind and compassionate man and in no way involved in gangs.

“I can’t think of a single person that would want that, that had problems or beef with my brother out here in these streets,” she said. “He was very known, very loved.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact LAPD’s Hollywood Division. Anonymous tips can be made through L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or online at L.A. Crime Stoppers
