The fourth installment in Legendary's MonsterVerse has hit $80.5 million domestically and $309.7 million overseas.

Godzilla vs. Kong has stomped past $390 million at the global box office to become the top-grossing Hollywood movie of the pandemic after besting the $365 million earned last fall by fellow Warner Bros.' release Tenet.

And it had no trouble staying atop the weekend charts with $7.7 million domestically in its third outing to hit $80.5 million through Sunday. Overseas, it took in $12.2 million for a foreign total of $309.7 million and $390.2 million worldwide.

China — where the box office has made a stunning comeback — rules the pandemic box office chart overall. Hi, Mom has grossed a huge $821 million, followed by Detective Chinatown 3 with $863.00

In the U.S., the fourth installment in Legendary's MonsterVerse passed up Tenet's entire run two weekends ago. GvK had the advantage of being the first movie to open after cinemas in New York and Los Angeles began reopening, albeit at reduced capacity.

The film's performance has been a boost for the battered film and exhibition business and underscored the pent-up demand among moviegoers to return to the theater. The tentpole is also available on HBO Max, although viewership numbers, unlike box office grosses, aren't disclosed.

Godzilla vs. Kong's foreign showing is led by China, where it has earned $177 million to date — the best showing of any title in Legendary's MonsterVerse series, not adjusted for inflation. Australia is next up with $19.1 million, followed by Mexico (17.3) and Taiwan ($12.1 million).

Imax has contributed $28.4 million overseas, or a huge 9 percent of the entire foreign tally.

Many parts of Europe are still battling the COVID-19 crisis and are under lockdown. Hollywood is hopeful those markets will be open within the next two months.

Canada, part of the North American box office, also continues to struggle. All told, 56 percent of North American theaters are now reopened.

Warners also reported foreign numbers on Sunday for video game adaptation Mortal Kombat, which doesn't land in North America until March 23. The pic grossed $5.7 million for the weekend from 28 markets for an early, two-week total of $19.2 million.

Elsewhere in North America, Bob Odenkirk's action pic Nobody (Universal) ended Sunday with a domestic total of $19.1 million and $34.5 million globally after coming in No. 2 for the session with $2.5 million in North America.

Screen Gems' The Unholy finished in third place with $2.1 million for a domestic tally of $9.6 million, followed by Raya and the Last Dragon (Disney) with $1.9 million for a domestic total of $37.7 million. Tom & Jerry (Warners) rounded out the top five with $1.1 million for a domestic cume of $42.6 million.

In recent days, theaters weren't thrilled when Paramount announced it is moving Tom Cruise's Top Gun sequel from July 2 to Thanksgiving, since it needs big, all-audience tentpoles to lure back as many moviegoers as possible. Hollywood, however, remains hopeful that there will still be some semblance of a summer season, beginning with Disney's Cruella and Paramount's A Quiet Place Part II over Memorial Day.

Los Angeles is the largest moviegoing market in the country, and is No. 1 on the list of top-grossing markets on any given weekend. That's despite the fact that Pacific Theatres and ArcLight Cinemas have announced that they won't reopen at all. Many are speculating that owner the Decurion Corp. will find a way to at least reopen ArcLight Hollywood, which includes the Cinerama Dome.
