Movie star Cameron Diaz—who stepped away from acting in 2014 and formally retired in 2018—”un-retired” Wednesday, announcing she will star in an upcoming film for Netflix with Jamie Foxx.
Key Facts
Foxx, who posted a clip of a phone call between him and Diaz on Twitter, enlisted the help of Tom Brady to bring Diaz back to work, as the famed quarterback un-retired himself earlier this year.
In the clip, Diaz said she’s “excited” to jump back into work on the Netflix movie, aptly called Back in Action, which will start production later this year.
Key Background
Diaz quietly stepped away from Hollywood eight years ago, and said in 2018 she was “actually retired.” She told Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop in 2020 she “decided to stop making movies and really focus on my personal life, my personal relationships, my family, my friends.” Diaz, who is known for her beloved roles in Shrek, Charlie’s Angels, The Holiday and There’s Something About Mary, married Benji Madden in 2015, and in 2019 they welcomed daughter Raddix. Diaz told Paltrow she felt “a peace” stepping away from her career. “When you’re making a movie…they own you. You’re there 12 hours a day for months on end. You have no time for anything else,” she said. “I had to basically take it back, and take responsibility for my life.”
