Hollywood Beach residents, business owners starting cleanup process after Nicole - WPLG Local 10

HOLLYWOOD BEACH, Fla. – Hollywood beach residents and business owners spent most of their morning cleaning up after Tropical Storm Nicole made landfall in Florida early Thursday.

The rising water made its way through the side streets, a block away from the beach and even across A1A, reaching some nearby businesses and homes.

Local 10 News cameras spotted heavily flooded streets off of Hollywood Boulevard and Sheridan Street.

The city of Hollywood says crews have already started the cleanup process now that the water has receded.

Many nearby businesses tried to use sandbags to create a barrier from the rising water, but were unsuccessful.

“They sandbagged a lot, but I think the sandbags got destroyed -- I think they were floating,” said one Hollywood Beach resident.

According to city officials, they will begin moving sand that got washed onto the boardwalk, back onto the beach.

“I feel for the business owners and the city of Hollywood,” said Hollywood Beach resident Gretchen Hammertime. “It’s really, really bad.”
