Hollywood Freeway Reopens After Armed Standoff - Patch

Hollywood Hills, CA — A law enforcement effort to serve an eviction notice in the Hollywood Hills led to an hours-long standoff and closure of the Hollywood (101) Freeway Thursday, ultimately ending with an apparent suicide, according to authorities.

Los Angeles Sheriff's Deputies attempted to serve an eviction notice at about 8 a.m. Thursday the 2300 block of Cahuenga Boulevard in the Hollywood Hills. As they sought entry to the apartment, the deputies heard gunfire coming from inside the apartment.

Sheriff's Sgt. Travis Morrow told reporters two deputies, along with representatives from the apartment building, approached the apartment Thursday morning, and when they knocked on the door and announced why they were there, "they heard a single gunshot come from within the apartment."

After that, Morrow said, deputies were unable to make contact with the person inside the apartment.

Because the apartment unit's window overlooked the freeway, the California Highway Patrol shut down the Hollywood (101) Freeway in the Cahuenga Pass area in both directions for hours due to the threat of an active shooter. The closure backed up traffic for miles through the heart of the city. The LAPD set up a perimeter around the building, and residents were advised to shelter in place.

Authorities later entered and found a person dead of "an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound," the sheriff's department reported.

After an hours-long closure, the freeway reopened at about 1 p.m.
