The Duchess of Sussex revealed she and Prince Harry are working on “exciting” TV and film projects as she walked the red carpet alongside some of the most accomplished women in Hollywood on Thursday night.
Wearing a camel, off-the-shoulder dress paired with a slicked bun, Meghan Markle beamed as she explained she and her husband hoped to make content that would make audiences “feel a sense of community”.
“Things that make people feel– I was going say ‘good,’ but it’s more than that, things that make people feel something, right?” the Duchess said during an interview at the Variety magazine Power of Women gala.
Meghan said she and Prince Harry “have so many exciting things on the slate.”
“I can’t wait until we can announce them, but I’m just really proud of what we’re creating,” she said, adding “my husband is loving it, too – it’s really fun.”
Meghan had been expected to be honoured at last year’s Power of Women event but pulled out following the death of her husband’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.
She later posed on the cover of Variety and sat down for an interview in which she called Queen Elizabeth “the most shining example” of female leadership.
This year, she was in the star-studded audience for the awards which were introduced by celebrities including Leonardo DiCaprio and Oprah Winfrey.
Two British actress were celebrated by their peers and used their time on stage to speak up for children in need.
Emily Blunt was thanked for her work helping young people with speech disorders:
Carey Mulligan used her acceptance speech to call for more protection for children in war zones:
Australian Margot Robbie, the star of Barbie, was named Producer of the Year alongside her production company co-founders:
Other honourees included Fantasia Barrino, Lily Gladstone and Billie Eilish, who performed alongside her brother Finneas O’Connell.
‘Isn’t that wild’
The night out for the Duchess of Sussex, 42, came amid the much-anticipated launch of the final series of Netflix’s The Crown, which focuses on the death of her mother-in-law, Diana, Princess of Wales.
It also comes after royal writer Omid Scobie made claims about her husband, the Duke of Sussex, ahead of the publication of his new book Endgame.
Speaking to a Variety reporter on Thursday night, Meghan also addressed the renewed popularity of Suits, the Netflix legal drama she starred in for seven years before her engagement to Prince Harry.
“Isn’t that wild,” she said of news the show had been viewed on the streaming service for a total of 45 billion minutes.
“It’s hard to find a show you can binge-watch that many episodes of these days, so that could have something to do with it,” the Duchess said. “But good shows are everlasting.”
The Sussexes have in recent years released documentary Heart of Invictus, a series called Live to Lead and the autobiographical project Harry & Meghan in which they controversially took a swipe at members of the royal family and at the tabloid press.
