El Paso man faces murder charge after 17-year-old girl shot at Hollywood street race - El Paso Times

An El Paso man was arrested in connection with a fatal shooting of a teen girl during an illegal street takeover race early Sunday in Hollywood, California.

Los Angeles police homicide detectives arrested Ramon Roque Monreal, 33, on a charge of murder, according to an LAPD news release.

Monreal was jailed under a $3 million bond.

Shortly after midnight Sunday, LAPD Hollywood officers responded to a call of street racing at the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue 

The street gathering had drawn about 200 people to the popular tourist area known for the Chinese Theatre and the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Associated Press reported.

Video showed crowds watching cars doing doughnuts as tires smoked on a blocked street in a takeover-style gathering.

A 17-year-old woman from Huntington Park, California, who was an innocent bystander, was shot while watching the cars, police said. The girl's name was not immediately released by police.

The victim was identified as Alejandra “Ale” Estrada in a report by CBS Los Angeles.

Los Angeles police said that Monreal was allegedly fighting with another man when he took out a firearm and fired, shooting the woman and wounding another man, who was hospitalized in serious condition.The girl died on the sidewalk.

Police reviewed videos on social media that appear to show the moments before and after the shooting.

About 3:45 a.m., Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies detained Monreal after an unrelated call in the Carson area, officials said. Monreal was allegedly in possession of a firearm.

Deputies notified Los Angeles homicide detectives, who arrested Monreal in connection with the Hollywood murder case.

El Paso County Jail records show Monreal only with a pair of arrests on traffic warrants more than a decade ago.
