Hollywood: 5 Inspiring Moments In The Netflix Miniseries (& 5 Most Disturbing) - Screen Rant

ureturet.blogspot.com

Ryan Murphy’s Netflix series Hollywood is the stuff of which dreams are made. With its story of several young people trying to make a go of it in Hollywood, it’s one of those shows that’s designed to make the viewer feel better about life (even if it’s not always that faithful to what actually happened in Hollywood in the postwar years). Not only that, but it also contains some of the most inspiring scenes that Murphy has ever created.

However, there is also a darker side to this series, and it’s not afraid to show some of the more sinister sides of this period of movie history.

10 Inspiring: Archie’s Speech at the Oscars

One of the most inspiring moments in the entire series occurs when Archie–a black, gay, screenwriter–wins an Oscar and takes the opportunity to speak from the heart about what this win means to him.

While the gathered crowd isn’t terribly receptive to the speech, it’s still one of those moments where the viewer feels caught up in the euphoria of this moment, a defining instant in both this young man’s life and for the industry as a whole.

9 Disturbing: George Cukor’s Party

George Cukor was, as all film aficionados know, one of the most talented directors of old Hollywood. He was also a closeted gay man who, in this series, tends to host parties for many of the other queer people of Hollywood.

At these parties, he often invites the young men who are “employees” at Ernie’s gas station. While there are a few poignant moments in this scene, it’s also disturbing to see the ways that the wealthy and powerful saw young men as commodities to be bought and sold.

8 Inspiring: The Ending

As the series ends, most of the characters have at least some form of a happy ending. Most notably, they are all going to be working on yet another powerful film designed to break through the old stigmas of Hollywood, this time about two gay men who find happiness together.

It might be a little too neat and tidy for the more cynical viewers out there, but most will find it inspiring to think about a 1950s Hollywood that was willing to move forward and take chances rather than continuing to play it safe.

7 Disturbing: Henry Willson’s First Meeting with Rock

When the man who would become Rock Hudson first comes to Hollywood, he’s quite the fish out of water. He manages to wrangle a meeting with none other than Henry Willson, a noted agent.

Unfortunately, he’s also a bit of a sadist, who seems to take cruel delight in mocking Rock and tearing him down. More disturbingly, he also coerces him into fulfilling Willson’s sexual fantasies. While he gets his own redemptive arc, it doesn’t quite erase the way that the viewer first meets him.

6 Inspiring: When Archie and Rock Move In Together

The romance between Rock Hudson and Archie is one of the most tender and touching of all of the relationships in the series.

Partly it’s because this relationship would never have been able to flourish in the real 1950s since gay men and people of color were still very much second-class citizens. Thus, it’s impossible not to be caught up and inspired by the moment when Archie and Rock finally move in with one another, cementing their commitment and love.

5 Disturbing: When the Mobsters Beat the Reporter

This series is definitely not afraid of showing the darker, seedier parts of Hollywood. In one noted instance, Henry Willson pulls a few strings to ensure that his mobster friends beat up a reporter threatening to release a scandalous story about Jack, one of the series’ main characters.

The beating itself is particularly brutal, a potent and disturbing reminder not only of the outsize influence of organized crime on Hollywood but also of just how far Willson is willing to go in pursuit of his own agenda.

4 Inspiring: When Archie and Rock Attend the Oscars Together

Most people probably know that being gay in the 1950s was almost completely taboo. It would have been unheard of for two men like Rock and Archie to be open about their relationship, particularly since they are also an interracial couple. It’s precisely these facts that make their attendance at the Oscars together-at which they hold hands, openly declaring their relationship to the world-so inspiring a moment.

At the same time, the negative reactions from many of the reporters are a potent reminder of the consequences of living one’s life so openly.

3 Disturbing: When Someone Burns A Cross In Front of Avis’ House

Avis, the wife of the studio boss, is one of the series’ best characters (hardly surprising, since she’s played by none other than Patti Lupone). It’s she, after all, who brings the entire production of the film Meg together.

Unfortunately, she also faces some pretty severe blowback for her choices, including having a cross burned on her front lawn. It’s a stunning and disturbing reminder of just how potently racist many people were in the 1950s and how far they were willing to go to enforce their racial vision on others.

2 Inspiring: The Rekindling of Avis and Ace’s Relationship

At the beginning of the series, studio boss Ace and his wife Avis have a very fraught and sometimes downright antagonistic relationship. However, after he has a cardiac event and nearly dies, they manage to rekindle their love for one another, both emotionally and physically.

It’s one of those inspiring moments that seems made for television, a reminder that true love can defeat the odds and emerge stronger and more powerful than ever.

1 Disturbing: When Jack First Realizes what Ernie’s Place Really Does

Poor Jack. He’s the epitome of an earnest young man. He just wants to make it in Hollywood, and he’s willing to do almost anything to achieve it. Unfortunately, as it turns out, the place that he goes to work is not just a gas station; it’s also a brothel.

The moment when he realizes it is one of the most disturbing in the entire series, as the viewer can see his dreams and innocence slowly draining away in the light of realization.
