Walking out of the Steinway Street Station for the R and M lines, there are plenty of shops and eateries in the Steinway Street business district.

It’s a piece of Hollywood in Queens at Kaufman Astoria Studios, which dates back to 1920.

What You Need To Know

  • The Steinway Street Station is a stop for the M and R lines in Astoria, Queens

  • The area is home to the Kaufman Arts District, which is anchored by Kaufman Astoria Studios

  • Kaufman Astoria Studios opened up in 1920

  • The Museum of the Moving Image is across the street and tells some of the stories of the studio

The historic film and television facility features its own studio back lot and is busy accommodating the tremendous amount of content being developed by streaming services.

“We’re filming “Succession,” “Awkwafina is Nora from Queens,” “Fleishman is in Trouble” is a new show for Apple here on Stage K. We just finished the “Time Travelers Wife” for HBO,” Tracy Capune, vice president of Kaufman Astoria, said.

While the studios aren’t typically open to the public, except for some special community events, it is the centerpiece of the Kaufman Arts District.

Not too far from the studio are the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts and the Museum of the Moving Image, which pays tribute to film, television and video games.

“There’s no museum in the country devoted to all of these forms, in one place,” Carl Goodman, executive director of the museum, said.

There is plenty of opportunity to view films of all types and to check out a new exhibit devoted to the hit television series “The Walking Dead.”

The museum also has an exhibition devoted to the groundbreaking work of the late Jim Henson — allowing visitors to check out the different muppets including Kermit, Big Bird, and other characters from Sesame Street, The Muppet Show, Fraggle Rock and more.

“We raised well over $100,000 on Kickstarter to build this exhibition so it isn’t just foundations and high net worth donors and so on that helped us, but the public who wanted to see this show happen,” Goodman said.

Checking out studio sets isn’t the only place to visit by the Steinway Street Station.

Sac’s Place is a 33-year-old Italian restaurant that moved into Kaufman Astoria Studios three years ago. Astoria natives Domenico and Anthony Sacramone share their family recipes from Italy with those who go in for a bite.

“We use plum tomatoes from Italy, when it comes to the New York-style pizza we puree it. When it comes to the Margherita old fashioned, we crush it by hand so it’s a little bit crunchier, and then we use fresh Mozzarella from the Aiello family that’s been providing us with fresh Mozzarella from the beginning,” Domenico Sacramone said.

So a trip on the M and R to Steinway Street will lead visitors to movie and television magic, a glimpse into Hollywood, and a slice of pizza.
