Ryan Murphy wrote ‘Hollywood’ diva role for Patti LuPone - Boston Herald

In Netflix’s “Hollywood,” Patti LuPone finally has the kind of great diva role on film that matches the many stage characters that have made her a living Broadway legend.

And she owes it all to a “crazy cocktail cape.” And a photo.

“I was on the set of ‘Pose,’” LuPone, 71, began, referring to Ryan Murphy’s LGBTQ hit series about New York’s gender non-conforming ballroom culture, “and Ryan’s right-hand man sent a picture of me in my costume to him.

“I heard when Ryan saw it, he said, ‘Ask Patti what she’s doing in September. I want to write a role for her in “Hollywood.” ’

“That’s how it happened! A picture of me in this fabulous outfit, a silly purple thing that somebody would have worn in the ’50s to go to the Copacabana.”

“Hollywood” creates multiple stories about the dreamers, seekers, the powerful and creative in the years following WWII.

While filled with legendary Hollywood names — stars like Rock Hudson, Tallulah Bankhead, Vivien Leigh, composer Cole Porter, Oscar-winning director George Cukor — “Hollywood” is Murphy and Ian Brennan’s fantasy, a redo of that bigoted era in a kinder, more contemporary light.

LuPone’s Avis gets it all rolling as she drives her Rolls into a gas station and picks up the attendant for a quick tryst. If her studio chief husband fools around, she will too.

Avis begins bitter and angry but by the final episode her life and attitudes have transformed.

“Avis is a great character to play, the best character I’ve ever had,” LuPone exclaimed. “A leading lady character!

“It was thrilling and,” she added with a laugh, “let’s face it! I look stunning. That was such a gorgeous period for women.”

Avis’ bitterness began when the film industry instantly crushed her youthful dream of stardom.

“She was told she could not become a movie star because she was Jewish — that was considered ‘ethnic’ at the time.

“You see besides the bitterness, her resignation and hurt. People in that situation — and I’ve certainly survived a lot of hard knocks — you don’t get beaten down. You survive it.

“Because if you haven’t been emotionally killed by it, destroyed by it, you can absorb the blows and continue living and there is triumph.

“She chose this life. She has power,” LuPone said. “She’s married to a powerful man, so she has power.

“And she relishes it: If this is the only way I can exploit my power, this is the way I’m going to do it.”
